**Saptrishi Kund** is a sacred glacial lake located near **Yamunotri**, in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. Perched at an altitude of approximately **4,421 meters (14,505 feet)**, it is the **source of the Yamuna River**, which holds immense religious significance in Hinduism as one of the four holy rivers of the **Char Dham Yatra**.
The name **Saptrishi Kund** translates to “Lake of the Seven Sages,” and according to mythology, this serene high-altitude lake is believed to be the meditation site of the **Sapta Rishis**—the seven great sages of ancient India. It is surrounded by rocky terrain, moraine ridges, and snow-clad peaks, and the water remains icy cold throughout the year.
Reaching Saptrishi Kund is a challenging trek, starting from **Yamunotri Temple**, and involves a steep ascent over rugged and high-altitude terrain. The trek is approximately **10–12 km one way** and is suited for experienced trekkers due to its difficulty and altitude.

Arrive at Janki Chatti (reachable by road from Barkot). Begin trek towards Yamunotri Temple (5 km) and offer prayers. Continue trekking to Upper Dhamni or a suitable base camp (2 km more). Scenic forest and mountain trail with views of the Yamuna Valley. Overnight stay in tents at the base camp.
Start early for a strenuous trek to Saptarishi Kund (~6 km one way). Steep, glacial terrain with rocky paths and moraine. Reach the sacred lake, believed to be the origin of the Yamuna River. Spend time near the pristine high-altitude lake surrounded by peaks. Descend back to base camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Reserved for acclimatization or weather-related delays. Optional short hike around the area or rest at camp. Ideal for photography and quiet time in the Himalayas. Overnight stay in tents.
Trek back down to Yamunotri and further to Janki Chatti (~7 km). Depart for Barkot or onward journey via road. Trek concludes with spiritual fulfillment and scenic memories.
