Roopkund trek
The Roopkund Trek is a captivating high-altitude Himalayan adventure located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Known for its mysterious Skeleton Lake, where hundreds of ancient human skeletons lie preserved at the bottom, this trek offers a unique mix of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and spiritual significance. The trail climbs up to an altitude of approximately 15,750 feet, taking trekkers through dense oak and rhododendron forests, expansive alpine meadows like Bedni and Ali Bugyal, and snow-covered landscapes with breathtaking views of peaks such as Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. The Roopkund Trek is best suited for moderately experienced trekkers due to its challenging terrain and high altitude. Typically completed in 7 to 8 days, it is best undertaken between May–June and September–October, avoiding the monsoon and extreme winter months. Arrive early at Kathgodam railway station. Drive through scenic mountain roads via Almora and Kausani to reach Lohajung (base camp at ~7,700 ft). Check-in, briefing by trek leader, and overnight stay in guesthouse or camp.
Start trek with a descent to the river and a steady climb to Didna Village or push further to Ali Bugyal, one of Asia’s most beautiful meadows. Walk through forests of oak and rhododendron. Camp setup and overnight stay.
Trek uphill through Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, vast alpine meadows offering panoramic views of Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. Visit Bedni Kund, a sacred pond. Reach Patar Nachauni (12,000+ ft), rest and overnight stay in tents.
Begin early morning ascent to Roopkund Lake (15,750 ft). The trail passes Kalu Vinayak temple and steep switchbacks. Reach Roopkund – a glacial lake with visible human skeletons around its edges. Enjoy stunning views, then descend back to Bedni Bugyal or Patar Nachauni for overnight stay.
Trek down to Lohajung (~7 km), then drive back to Kathgodam. Arrive by late evening. Trek ends with unforgettable memories.
