The Kedarkantha Trek is one of the most accessible and rewarding winter treks in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, this trek is especially famous for its snow-covered trails, dense pine forests, beautiful campsites, and a thrilling summit climb to 12,500 ft that offers a 360-degree view of Himalayan peaks.
Distance: 210–220 km Duration: 9–10 hours by road Altitude: 640 m to 1,950 m Early morning departure from Haridwar or Rishikesh. Scenic drive through Mussoorie, Purola, Mori, and Netwar along the Tons River. Arrival at Sankri by evening, check-in to a guesthouse or homestay. Dinner and overnight stay in Sankri.
Trek Distance: 4 km Duration: 4–5 hours Altitude: 1,950 m to 2,750 m After breakfast, begin the trek from Sankri. Trail passes through pine and maple forests with gradual ascent. Reach Juda Ka Talab, a small alpine lake often frozen in winter. Set up camp near the lake. Evening acclimatization and relaxation. Meals and overnight stay in tents.
Trek Distance: 4 km Duration: 3–4 hours Altitude: 2,750 m to 3,430 m Continue the trek through dense forests and snowy clearings. Reach Kedarkantha Base Camp with open meadows and panoramic mountain views. Prepare for the early morning summit push. Meals and overnight stay in tents.
Total Trek Distance: 9 km (6 km round trip to summit + 3 km to Hargaon) Duration: 7–8 hours Altitude: 3,430 m to 3,800 m (summit), descend to 2,700 m Start trekking before dawn (around 3:00–4:00 AM) to catch the sunrise from the summit. Steep ascent through snow-covered slopes to reach Kedarkantha Peak. Enjoy 360-degree views of major Himalayan ranges including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and more. Descend back to base camp, have brunch, and continue to Hargaon. Meals and overnight stay in tents at Hargaon.
