Overview

Assan Barrage, located about 40 kilometers from Dehradun at the confluence of the Asan River and the Eastern Yamuna Canal, is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Established in 1967 and later declared as India’s first conservation reserve in 2005, it now holds Ramsar Wetland status due to its ecological significance. This serene wetland habitat attracts over 50 species of waterbirds, including more than 19 migratory species from Central Asia and Europe. During the winter months, visitors can spot bar-headed geese, red-crested pochards, pintails, ruddy shelducks, gadwalls, coots, and teals, among many others. Raptors like marsh harriers, steppe eagles, and Pallas’s fish-eagles add thrilling moments as they soar over the waters. The summer months also see a flurry of activity with species like painted storks, egrets, night herons, and cormorants. Birdwatchers can explore the area via nature trails, eco-huts, and even boat rides that provide excellent vantage points for photography and observation. Framed by the Shivalik hills and sal forests, Assan Barrage offers a refreshing day-long retreat into the wild, perfect for amateur and seasoned birders alike.
