Kedarnath
The Kedarnath Yatra from Haridwar or Rishikesh is a deeply spiritual journey to one of the most revered shrines of Lord Shiva, located high in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Starting from the holy towns of Haridwar or Rishikesh, the route takes pilgrims through scenic and sacred locations like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Guptkashi before reaching Sonprayag. From Sonprayag, a short drive takes you to Gaurikund, which is the base point for the 16 km trek to the Kedarnath Temple. The trek, though challenging, is incredibly rewarding as it winds through majestic mountains, rivers, and dense forests. For those unable to trek, pony rides, palanquins, and helicopter services are available from places like Phata or Guptkashi. Kedarnath Temple, standing at an altitude of 3,583 meters, is believed to have been built by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and holds immense significance for devotees of Lord Shiva. The temple is open from late April or early May to October, after which it closes due to heavy snowfall. The entire journey from Haridwar or Rishikesh to Kedarnath is not just a pilgrimage but a soul-stirring experience of faith, endurance, and divine beauty.
